Located along the lower reaches of Oxley Creek, approximately 12 kilometres south-west of Brisbane’s central business district, the treatment plant sits within a natural floodplain. When Hurricane Florence brought days of relentless rainfall and flooding to Myrtle Beach, most homes were overwhelmed by rising waters. But three private homeowners stayed dry. With Geodesign’s rapidly deployed flood barriers in place, their properties withstood ten days of high water without a drop reaching the homes.

A Race Against the Storm

Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wilmington, North Carolina on September 14, 2018. A surge of up to 3 metres of water swamped inland areas, causing widespread saltwater flooding alongside the storm’s strong winds. As the Waccamaw River and the Intracoastal Waterway near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, swelled from the heavy rains, three homeowners decided to fight back with deployable flood barriers.

Geodesign Barriers, then operating out of Hobe Sound, Florida, answered a call from Myrtle Beach homeowner Ted Richardson on the night of Thursday, September 20. A truck was loaded with equipment immediately, and a two-person crew set out the following day for the 650-mile drive to South Carolina.

By mid-Saturday, before the waters reached the properties, the crew had surrounded three homes with more than 1,000 feet of heavy-duty barriers. One property was encircled with a P40 Industrial flood barrier (40 inches high), another with 300 feet of C48 Heavy Duty flood barriers (48 inches high), and a third with a mix of both.

How the Barriers Worked

The systems were installed in less than two days, proving that deployable flood barriers can be set up quickly and effectively. The barriers relied on an A-frame steel design that anchors itself under the immense pressure of rising water.

Crews installed metal supports, secured them with chains, and draped a watertight poly liner across the system to seal out the floodwater. The result: all three homes stayed completely dry through ten days of flooding, with up to three feet of water covering the surrounding area.
